REGINA, Sask. – The Hockey Saskatchewan Officiating Development Program (ODP) is pleased to announce Maltreatment Awareness Days on November 4-5, 2025. This two-day initiative represents a province-wide commitment to creating a positive, respectful experience for everyone involved in the game.
On November 4, 11.4 Maltreatment Awareness Day highlights the corresponding section of the Hockey Canada Rule Book, focusing on Rule 11.4: Discrimination. This rule prohibits taunts, insults, and intimidation based on race, ethnicity, gender, or other personal characteristics. On-ice officials are trained to assess a Gross Misconduct for such behaviour and to report incidents to Hockey Saskatchewan for possible further action.
On November 5, 11.5 Maltreatment Awareness Day shifts attention to the corresponding rule: Physical Harassment of Officials. This rule reinforces the importance of protecting the safety and integrity of referees and linespersons by addressing any form of deliberate or excessive physical contact. Players or team officials who physically threaten, intimidate, or make intentional contact with an official face a Match Penalty and are subject to further review through the appropriate disciplinary process.
Beyond rule enforcement, Maltreatment Awareness Days aim to educate players, parents, coaches, and members about the lasting impact maltreatment can have on both mental and physical well-being.
To support this initiative, Hockey Saskatchewan has launched a Maltreatment Awareness Day webpage, offering resources and insights into Rules 11.4 and 11.5. The webpage provides guidance on how members across all levels of the game can help foster a safe and supportive hockey environment.
Hockey Saskatchewan encourages everyone to visit the webpage, learn more about maltreatment prevention, and take an active role in creating positive change in the sport.
