Where Fun Wins

Hockey Saskatchewan’s "Where Fun Wins" initiative is designed to foster enthusiasm and growth in hockey participation among the youth of Saskatchewan, particularly targeting the Under-7 (U7), Under-9 (U9), and Under-11 (U11) age divisions which consist of roughly 12,000 members. Through the initiative, we will emphasize the joy of playing hockey, focusing on grassroots development and inclusion, ensuring that every child feels welcomed, valued, and excited to participate in the sport!

People of all ages enjoy playing hockey because of the physical effort, team building, and the amazing feeling of skating and gliding on the ice. Physical and personal development is achieved through playing hockey which lasts a lifetime.

AGE-SPECIFIC ICE SURFACES

As young players develop their skills, the size of the playing surface evolves to match their growing abilities and needs. Starting with cross-ice games at the Under-7 (U7) level, players benefit from a smaller playing area that encourages more engagement, puck touches, and opportunities to practice skating and other fundamental skills.

As players advance to the Under-9 (U9) level, they transition to half-ice games, which further develop their abilities in a more challenging yet still accessible environment. This intermediate stage helps players refine their skills while maintaining high levels of involvement and enjoyment.

Finally, at the Under-11 (U11) level, players move to full-ice games, where they can fully apply the skills they've developed in a regulation-sized arena. This progression ensures that players are not only prepared for the demands of full-ice hockey but have also built a solid foundation of skills and confidence through each stage of their development.
