Alberta Knocks Down Saskatchewan

CALGARY, Alta. – Tyler Steenbergen scored and set up two more as Team Alberta skated to a 5-1 win over Team Saskatchewan in action at the 2013 Western Canada Under-16 Challenge Cup on Friday evening at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary, AB.

Cole Johnson and Alex Rotundo each picked up a goal and an assist while Mason Shaw and Matthew Phillips added singles for Alberta, which outshot Saskatchewan 45-10 in the contest as they improve to 2-0 in round robin action. Austin McGrath stopped nine of 10 shots he faced to earn the win in his first appearance in the tournament.

Taylor Ross – with his third goal in two games – scored the lone marker for Team Saskatchewan, who managed a combined five shots on net over the final two periods of play as they drop to 0-2 in the round robin.

Alberta and BC now both own 2-0 records in the round robin, meaning they will face off for Gold on Sunday in a rematch of the 2012 Gold medal game.  Saskatchewan and Manitoba, both 0-2 in round robin play, will meet in the Bronze medal game on Sunday.

The round robin concludes on Saturday with previews of the Gold and Bronze medal games as Team Alberta faces Team BC (11:00am MT) and Team Saskatchewan meeting Team Manitoba (3:00pm MT).
