Next Generation of Saskatchewan Hockey Stars Unveiled at 2023 WHL Prospects Draft

REGINA, Sask. – The Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft concluded on Thursday, May 11, 2023, with this year’s draft highlighting 2008-born eligible players.
The WHL Prospects Draft is an opportunity for young players to take the next step in their hockey development and set their sights toward a future NHL Entry Draft down the road.
The first Saskatchewan-born player to hear their name called was Dayne Beuker (Humboldt) of the Humboldt Broncos U15 AA who was taken 14th overall by the Lethbridge Hurricanes. With the 17th pick, Griffin Darby (Swift Current) who was selected by the Portland Winterhawks. In total, Saskatchewan had four players chosen in the first round and all are members of the Sask First high-performance program. Rounding out the four 1st round picks were Beckett Hamilton (Saskatoon) at #18, and Caine Wilke (Saskatoon) at #20.
When the final round concluded, Saskatchewan was fortunate to have 44 players selected overall. In comparison, the province saw a total of 50 players selected in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft and 41 were selected the previous year.
