REGINA, Sask. – The Hockey Saskatchewan is partnering with Hockey Canada and other provincial branches to observe Maltreatment Awareness Day on November 4, 2024. This day marks a province-wide commitment to ensuring a positive, respectful experience for everyone involved in the sport.
Maltreatment Awareness Day highlights Section 11 of the Hockey Canada Rulebook, especially Rule 11.4 on discrimination, which prohibits taunts, insults, and intimidation based on race, ethnicity, gender, and similar characteristics. On-ice officials are trained to penalize these behaviors with a Gross Misconduct, reporting incidents to Hockey Saskatchewan for possible further action.
Beyond enforcing rules, Maltreatment Awareness Day aims to educate players, parents, coaches, and Minor Hockey Associations on the negative impacts of maltreatment on mental and physical well-being.
To support this initiative, Hockey Saskatchewan has launched a Maltreatment Awareness Day webpage, providing resources and insights into Section 11. The webpage includes guidelines for players, parents, coaches, and officials on how they can contribute to a safe and supportive hockey environment.
Hockey Saskatchewan encourages everyone to visit the Maltreatment Awareness Day webpage, learn about maltreatment prevention, and consider ways to contribute to positive change.
