Education Assistance Program Making Strides with 14 Scholarships to Hockey Saskatchewan Members

REGINA, Sask. Assisting coaches, officials and players in their pursuit of higher education is a goal Hockey Saskatchewan continues to make strides.

Hockey Saskatchewan is pleased to announce on Oct. 7, 2022, that a total of fourteen (14) registered members have been selected for its Education Assistance Grants from the 2021-22 season.

The game of hockey provides many teachable moments and some equally valuable life lessons within the rink. In addition to these on-ice experiences, Hockey Saskatchewan recognizes the importance of a strong educational foundation and bestows academic scholarships to members who meet the application criteria.

Hockey Saskatchewan received a total of 30 applications for these Scholarships this past season.

The Education Assistance Program awards a minimum of fourteen (14) $1,000.00 Scholarships annually to registered members as follows:

  • 8 - Regional (zone) members (player, coach or official)
  • 1 – Under-18 AAA registered player
  • 1 - Female registered player
  • 1 - Junior A, Junior B, Junior C or Senior registered player
  • 1 - Saskatchewan Officiating Development Model
  • 2 - Registered Officials

Selected coaches, officials and players must attend a university based in the province, affiliate college or Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Recipients are only eligible to receive the grant once.

The grant will be paid upon proof of enrolment. The proof of enrolment will be in the form of receipts from the educational institution the recipient is attending. The payment, which is to be applied to tuition and the purchase of textbooks, will be made directly to the applicant.

This past season serves as the 33rd year of the Education Assistance Program. Established on a Saskatchewan-wide basis in 1990-91, over 390 scholarships have been awarded, representing an investment of over $390,000 by Hockey Saskatchewan. The Hockey Saskatchewan Scholarship Fund was created from a surplus received from the 1991 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships held in Saskatchewan.
