The 2023 Canada Winter Games are set to get underway this weekend in Prince Edward Island.
The Games, set to take place Feb. 18 – Mar. 5, will feature a number of Saskatchewan individuals including 217 athletes, 74 coaches and support staff, 26 mission staff and 26 officials coming from 60 communities across Saskatchewan, forming a full contingent of 343 participants.
Saskatoon speed skating athlete Luca Veeman will lead Team Saskatchewan in the Opening Ceremony as the province’s flag bearer. Veeman, 17, is one of Saskatchewan’s most promising young speed skaters. He started training and competing at six-years-old and currently trains with the Saskatoon Lions Speed Skating Club under Tim Comfort and father, Chris Veeman, President of Speed Skating Saskatchewan.
There will be more than 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches from across Canada taking part in the 29th edition of the event, which features more than 150 events across different 20 sports and a major arts and culture festival.
Athletes who compete at the Canada Games represent the country’s next generation of national, international, and Olympic and Paralympic champions. Team Sask alumni Mark McMorris, Emily Clark, Rylan Wiens, Shelby Newkirk, Kenzie Priddell, Catriona LeMay Doan, Graeme Fish and Brittany Hudak to name a few, can all count their previous Canada Games experiences as a stepping-stone to the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
