REGINA, Sask. – Following an exciting and highly competitive opening weekend of playoffs, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) is reinforcing expectations around fan conduct with the launch of its “Be a Fan, Not a Fanatic” campaign.
While the intensity on the ice has delivered strong, entertaining hockey, the league has identified instances of inappropriate behaviour in the stands that do not reflect the standards of the SJHL.
“Our players are young athletes, many away from home, who are pursuing their dreams and playing the game they love,” said Commissioner Kyle McIntyre.
“They deserve an environment built on respect from both home and visiting fans.”
The SJHL is reminding all teams and their leadership groups that abusive language, taunting, or disruptive actions directed at players, coaches, or officials will not be tolerated. This includes behaviour such as leaning over benches, using excessive noisemakers, or confronting visiting teams as they enter or exit the ice surface.
As part of the initiative, our teams will instituting the following practices.
- Ensure appropriate and trained security is in place, particularly around visiting benches and team exits
- Consider designated seating areas for visiting fans where appropriate
- Proactively address and remove fans displaying inappropriate or disruptive behavior
The league also emphasizes that fan conduct reflects not only on individual teams, but on their communities and the SJHL as a whole.
“It’s great to be passionate about hockey, but there is a line,” McIntyre added.
“We are striving to showcase our players, teams, and league in a premier and professional manner. Respectful environments help ensure the best possible experience for everyone involved.”
The SJHL reminds fans that attending games is a privilege, and that respectful behaviour, similar to what would be expected in workplaces and homes, is essential to maintaining a positive atmosphere.
As playoff series continue across the league, the focus remains on the game itself.
“The outcome should be decided on the ice between the whistles, not in the stands,” Commissioner Kyle said.
“We encourage all fans to support their teams with passion, while showing respect for opponents, officials, and the game.”
The SJHL thanks its teams, communities, and fans for their cooperation and looks forward to a safe, competitive, and enjoyable playoff season for all.
