Moose Jaw will write history when South Korea and Czechia kick off the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championships A-Pool on Sunday (28 May).

It is the first time Canada hosts a World Para Ice Hockey sanctioned event and the first major tournament in the sport to be played in the country since the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games.

The Moose Jaw Events Centre will see eight teams competing for the world title until 4 June. The competition will be streamed live on the Moose Jaw 2023 website and World Para Ice Hockey Facebook page with geo-block restrictions in Canada and Czechia.

Three games will be held on day one. Following Korea-Czechia, Paralympic bronze medallists China will make their A-Pool Worlds debut against Italy. Norway and Germany close the action on Sunday.

Hosts Canada will be joined by Czechia, Korea and the defending Paralympic and world champions United States in Group A at the World Championships, while Group B features China, Germany, Italy and Norway.

The host nation and world champions USA will make their debut on Monday. USA begins its quests for the sixth world title against Czechia led by Declan Farmer, the first Para ice hockey player to be nominated to the Laureus Awards earlier in the year.

Canada will entertain the home crowd facing Korea. The Canadian are the reigning world and Paralympic silver medallists and have four world titles to its name, last claiming gold in 2017.

"It has been so long since our family, friends and people in Canada have been able to watch our sport live, and I think that's the best way to see it," said Canadian captain Tyler McGregor

"As Para athletes that makes you feel so valued, and we're honoured that we get to play our sport in front of our home fans,” McGregor added.

Moose Jaw 2023 will also feature three-time World Championships medallists South Korea, Paralympic bronze medallists China, five-time World Championships medallists Norway, the next Paralympic Winter Games hosts Italy, as well as Czechia and Germany. Both China and Germany are newcomers to the A-Pool after finishing in the top two at the 2021 World Championships B-Pool in the German capital Berlin.

Founded in 1882, Moose Jaw is the fourth largest city in the province of Saskatchewan. Moose Jaw is a significant industrial center and important railway junction for the province’s agricultural produce and is home to the Canadian Arms Forces Snowbirds, Canada’s military aerobatic air demonstration team.

The Moose Jaw Events Centre, Southern Saskatchewan’s premier events centre, has previously hosted two Curling Canada’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Canada Cup of Curling, Hockey Canada’s Telus Cup, the Canadian Wheelchair Curling National Championships, and the Canadian Hockey League’s Canada-Russia series, in addition to international recording artists Dolly Parton, Motley Crue, Backstreet Boys, and Alan Jackson. The Moose Jaw Events Centre is also home to the Western Hockey League’s Moose Jaw Warriors.
