SPOKANE, Wash. – With every goal and assist this season, Atley Calvert is making Moose Jaw hockey history.

The 20-year-old forward surpassed the 200-point mark in the Moose Jaw Warriors’ lopsided 12-3 win over Spokane on Saturday.

In Saturday’s win, Calvert set a single-game career-high with five points, while also setting a new single-season career-high in goals with 41 and points with 79.

Calvert also now holds the Warriors’ franchise record for goals (99), assists (105) and points (204) by a Moose Jaw-born player, breaking the previous marks held by David Bararuk.

“It’s definitely humbling for sure, anytime I’d go to the Warrior games I’d look up to those guys,” Calvert said after practice on Monday in Spokane.

“I grew up watching all the Warrior greats before me, so now it’s pretty cool to – I don’t want to say one of them – but definitely a player and I hope I made my impact on the community.”

In his final season in the Western Hockey League, Calvert has joined some lofty company when it comes to Moose Jaw-born players in the league.

He sits fourth all-time in points behind Len Nielsen, Brent Gilchrist and Clark Gillies, etching his name among some of the greatest players to come out of the Friendly City.

“When I first started, I was just happy to be in the league and enjoying every day and nothing has really changed, just trying to enjoy every day and make every day worth it,” Calvert said.

Calvert has 10 more regular season games to continue adding to his legacy.

The Warriors are off until Wednesday on their eight-game road trip after scoring 21 goals in two wins over Tri-City and Spokane over the weekend.

Calvert said the team needs to take advantage of its practice time over the next few days.

“We’ve got two days to practice here, so that’s big, anytime you can get on the ice during a trip like this, it’s good, we’ve got to make sure we’re executing and making the most of these practices,” he said.

Moose Jaw snapped a three-game losing skid with last weekend’s big wins.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this road trip is the only time that Calvert and many of his teammates are getting to experience the U.S. Division.

Calvert said he’s enjoying it the experience.

“I love it out here, the fans are awesome, the rinks are great, we’ve only seen two of them, but I’m excited to go to the last four here this week, it’s been awesome,” he said.

The Warriors return to game action coming up on Wednesday night when they head into Portland to take on the Winterhawks.

After that, the road trip wraps up with games in Everett on Friday, Seattle on Saturday and Wenatchee on Sunday.
