SASKATOON, Sask. - The Saskatchewan Huskies have captured back-to-back Canada West championships.

Twenty-seven Western Hockey League alumni helped the Dogs hoist the Dr. W.G. Hardy Trophy on Saturday night- including 16 skaters who were a part of the 2025 championship Huskies squad.

Saskatchewan defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 5-0 and 4-2 in the title series sweep.

Rookie U Sask goaltender Nolan Maier was named Championship MVP after allowing just two goals on 63 shots in two outings, including a 33-save shutout in Game 1.

Maier, 25, is the second-winningest goaltender in WHL history with 122 regular-season victories with the Saskatoon Blades.

“It’s special,” Huskies bench boss Brandin Cote told Mount Royal reporter Ethan Bomhof postgame. “It’s hard to win, and it’s harder to repeat.”

Canada West Rookie of the Year and 2024 WHL U.S. Division Second Team All-Star Conner Roulette scored the championship-winning goal and added an assist in the 4-2 road win on Saturday.

But the journey also doesn’t end here for the Huskies or the Cougars.

Both teams are preparing to head east for the 2026 University Cup in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Saskatchewan hopes to change the colour of its medal after earning bronze in 2025, while the Cougars are on the prowl for their first national men’s medal.

Mount Royal also set a record for the longest game in U SPORTS history in a heartbreaking fifth overtime loss that lasted more than 143 minutes to Toronto Metropolitan University.

The 2026 University Cup runs from March 19-22 at Saint Mary’s University.

Since 1993, the WHL has awarded nearly 8,000 scholarships to graduate players. The WHL is the leading supplier of hockey scholarships in Western Canada and offers one of the most comprehensive scholarships in North America.
