Coaching Certification Program

8.01.01    Hockey Saskatchewan Coaching Certification Program

Coaching Program Coordinator: Blaine Stork, Senior Coordinator of Hockey Development – Coaching

NOTE: Associations will be able to request Coach Certification and Coach Specialty Clinics through the office.  Some clinics will be determined with pre–selected associations/communities hosting clinics.  There will be a recommended number of participants for the clinics.

b)    Coaching Certification

i)    For Minor Hockey, all coaches must obtain the appropriate coaching level, as defined by the Regulations, by December 20th of the current season.

ii)    It is the Minor Hockey Assocoiation's responsibility to ensure all of their coaches have the proper coaching certification.

iii)    If a coach does not obtain the appropriate coaching certification level, the Minor Hockey Association they are registered with will be fined $50.00 and he/she may be suspended for the rest of the season and that coach will be unable to be registered the following season by any Minor Hockey Association until such time all deficient coaching certifications are completed.

NOTE:  Coaches must be certified with the proper certification according to the Division/Category that they are coaching.  Example:  If a coach has Development 1 – Dev 1 and is coaching at the U11 Division, he/she must be certified with Coach 2 – Coach Level certification, or if a coach has Coach 2 – Coach Level and is coaching U7, he/she must have Coach 1 – Intro to Coach Certification.

iv)    For Minor Hockey, after the December 20th certification deadline, teams must always have at least one Coach with the proper certification on the bench.

v)    Teams in violation of this rule may be subject to disciplinary action by either the League President in the case of League games or the Officer Of Discipline in all other games.

vi)    All Female Teams registered with Hockey Saskatchewan must have a Female Coach or Assistant Coach registered.

vii)    All Teams registered with Hockey Saskatchewan must have at least one (1) person who is defined as the Head Coach and must have the appropriate coaching certification level as illustrated.

c)    Hockey Canada Safety Program

i)    For Minor Hockey, all Teams must have a registered Team Official certified through the Hockey Canada Safety Program (HCSP Level 1 or HU-Safety) by December 20th of the current season.

ii)    If a Team does not have one Team Official registered with the proper Safety Certification by December 20th of the current season, the Association or Team they are registered with will be fined $50.00 per infraction and those Teams eligible for Interbranch Competition will be deemed ineligible until such time that a Team Official is certified through the Hockey Canada Safety Program.

d)    Respect in Sport Program

i)    For Minor Hockey, all Team Officials registered (with the exception of On-Ice Volunteers under the age of sixteen (16)) must have completed Respect in Sport (RIS) On-line by December 20th of the current season.

ii)    If a Team Official does not complete RIS On-line, the Association they are registered with will be fined $50.00 per infraction.

e)    Checking Skills 1 Certification Program

i)    For Minor Hockey, all Head Coaches on U9 and U11 Male and Female Teams must complete the online HU-On-line Checking clinic by December 20th of the current season.

ii)    It is recommended that all U9 and U11 Assistant Coaches also have the online HU- Checking Skills 1 Certification.

iii)    All Head Coaches on U13 to U18 Male and Female Teams must have obtained the Hockey Saskatchewan Coach Checking Skills 1 Certification Clinic by December 20th of the current season.

iv)    It is recommended that all U13 to U18 Assistant Coaches also have the Checking Skills 1 Certification.

v)    If the Head Coach of the registered Team does not acquire the Checking Skills 1 Certification by December 20th of the current season, the Association they are registered with will be fined $50.00 per infraction.

f)    Goaltending 1 Certification Program

i)    For Minor Hockey, at least one Team Official registered as a Coach on U9 to U18 Male and Female Teams must have obtained the Hockey Saskatchewan Goaltending 1 Certification Clinic by December 20th of the current season.

ii)    It is recommended that all Coaches have the Goaltending 1 Certification.

iii)    If a Team does not have one Team Official registered as a Coach who attended a Goaltending 1 Certification Clinic by December 20th of the current season, the Association they are registered with will be fined $50.00 per infraction.

g)    Helmet Requirement

i)    For the safety of all participants, it is mandatory in all levels of Minor Hockey within Saskatchewan that any registered Team Official (Coach, Assistant Coach, Trainer, Manager, On-ice Volunteer, etc.) Guest Coach or Volunteer who is on the ice for any practice must wear a CSA approved helmet with the chin strap of the helmet securely fastened.

ii)   Violations of this policy can be reported to Hockey Saskatchewan by any concerned party, whether a registered participant, stakeholder or member of the public.

Violations must be submitted to Hockey Saskatchewan in writing, including photo or video evidence of the violation.  The submission must provide the date(s) and location(s) of the violation as well as the names of the offending participant(s).

iii)    Any Team Official, Team and/or Association found to be non-compliant with the Hockey Saskatchewan Coach Helmet regulation will be subject to sanctions from both the Minor Hockey Association and/or Hockey Saskatchewan.

Sanctions may include but are not limited to:

a)    Registered Team Official(s) may be suspended.

b)    Minor Hockey Association (and members) not being able to enter Hockey Saskatchewan Provincial Playoffs.

c)    Minor Hockey Association (and members) not being able to host any Hockey Saskatchewan sanctioned event.

d)    Minor Hockey Association (and members) not being able to attend any Hockey Saskatchewan sanctiond event.

e)    Minor Hockey Association’s Hockey Saskatchewan membership reviewed.
